Routine Footcare
Routine podiatry care (also called core podiatry) refers to the regular management of foot and nail conditions that do not require specialist interventions. It is typically provided by both NHS and private podiatrists and includes treatments such as:
Common Elements of Routine Podiatry Care
-
Nail Care – Trimming, reducing thickened nails, and managing fungal infections.
-
Callus & Corn Removal – Treating hard skin and corns to prevent discomfort and ulceration.
-
Ingrown Toenail Management – Conservative treatment (e.g., nail bracing, cutting techniques) but not surgery.
-
Skin Conditions – Treating dry, cracked skin, athlete’s foot, verrucae, and dermatitis.
-
Basic Biomechanical Assessment – Checking foot posture and advising on footwear.
-
Diabetic Foot Health Checks – Routine monitoring for those at low risk of complications.
Routine Podiatry Care in the NHS vs. Private Sector
-
NHS: Usually only provided for high-risk patients (e.g., diabetes, vascular disease, or severe foot deformities). Many areas have stopped offering routine care for low-risk patients.
-
Private: Available for all patients, typically as regular maintenance every 6-8 weeks, depending on need.
